What is my model car collection worth? 5 factors that determine the value

April 28, 2026 · · Modelcar.com

Many collectors ask us the same question: what is my collection actually worth? The answer is rarely simple. The price of a scale model is determined by a combination of factors — and not always the ones you would expect. In this article we explain the five most important ones.

1. The manufacturer's brand

Not all scale models are equal. Brands such as AUTOart, CMC, BBR, Kyosho and Minichamps are internationally regarded as the top of the segment. Models from these manufacturers hold their value well and are in high demand among collectors worldwide. Mass-production brands like Maisto or Bburago are worth considerably less, even if they look superficially similar.

2. The condition of the model

A model car in perfect condition can be worth three to five times more than the same model with damage. Scratches on the paintwork, broken mirrors or discoloured wheels significantly reduce the value. We assess each model on a scale from new to damaged, and this weighs heavily in our offer.

3. The original packaging

This is perhaps the most underestimated factor. A model with its original box is on average 30 to 50% more valuable than the same model without packaging. The box proves provenance, protects the model and is an absolute requirement for many serious collectors. So never throw away the box, not even for models you have had on display for years.

4. Rarity and production run

Limited editions and models that are no longer in production become increasingly scarce. That drives up the price. A CMC model of a pre-war Mercedes produced in an edition of 2,000 pieces is priced fundamentally differently from a standard Minichamps from a large series. Always check the serial number or production card if present.

5. Current market demand

The scale model market moves. Ferrari and Porsche are always popular, but certain Japanese sports cars have risen strongly in recent years. Brands like Exoto (extremely limited editions) become scarcer as editions sell out and therefore more expensive. We monitor the international market on Marktplaats, eBay and specialist auction houses, and translate that directly into our offers.
