Original packaging for scale models: how much more is your box worth?
Many collectors underestimate the importance of the original packaging. The box is not merely protection during transport — it is an inseparable part of a scale model's value. In our day-to-day practice we see it time and again: a model with its original box consistently fetches more than the same model without one.
How much exactly?
As a general guideline: a model without its original packaging is worth 30 to 50 per cent less than the same model with its box. For rare or premium models that difference can be even greater. An AUTOart Signature Series model worth €300 with its box might fetch only €150 to €180 without one — a difference of more than €100 on a single model.
Why is the box so important?
There are three reasons why collectors place such a high value on the original packaging:
- Proof of authenticity: the box proves that the model is genuine and not a reproduction
- Completeness: for a serious collector a model without its box is incomplete, just like a book without its cover
- Resale: a model with its box is always easier to resell and at a better price
A damaged box still has value
A box with a small tear or discoloured corners is still better than no box at all. Never throw away damaged packaging — it still has value. For premium models from CMC or BBR, even the inner foam inserts, included gloves and certificates are relevant to the overall value.
How should you store the packaging?
- Store boxes upright or flat, not stacked with heavy weight on top
- Avoid direct sunlight — UV light yellows cardboard quickly
- Dry storage environment — moisture damages cardboard and can cause mould
- Store certificates, production cards and gloves separately in a zip-lock bag
