Storing scale models: tips for proper preservation

The condition of a scale model has a direct impact on its value. A well-preserved collection is considerably more valuable at the point of sale than the same models that have spent years yellowing in direct sunlight or gathering dust in a damp cellar. With a few simple measures you can preserve the value of your collection for the long term.

1. Avoid direct sunlight

UV radiation is the greatest enemy of your collection. Sunlight discolours paintwork, yellows rubber tyres, attacks plastic parts and damages the cardboard of original packaging. Never expose models to direct sunlight, even for a few hours a day. Use display cabinets with UV-filtering glass if you want to exhibit the models.

2. Store in a dry space

Humidity is the second major threat. Moisture attacks metal (oxidation), damages cardboard and foam, and can cause mould on rubber and textiles. Store your collection in a dry space with a relative humidity of 45 to 55 percent. A cellar or garage is generally too damp.

3. Store in the original box

The original packaging offers optimal protection for the model and increases its value at the point of sale. Models that have been safely stored in their original box for years are consistently more valuable when sold. Return models you are not actively displaying to their box.

4. Clean carefully and infrequently

Remove dust with a soft brush or a decorating brush — not a damp cloth. Never use cleaning products on the paintwork: even mild products can damage the finish. Polish is out of the question. If you must clean, use a dry microfibre cloth with minimal pressure.

5. Rubber tyres deserve special attention

The rubber tyres on older models can dry out, crack or become sticky over time. This is a chemical process that is difficult to stop, but you can slow it by storing models in a stable, cool environment and not leaving them resting on the rubber — place them on their foam insert in the box.

6. Store certificates and documents separately

Certificates, production cards, gloves and other documents supplied with premium models are a separate component of their value. Store them in a zip-lock bag or archival box, away from moisture, light and acid.
