Buying second-hand scale models: what should you look out for?
Buying second-hand scale models is a great way to expand your collection without paying retail price. Sold-out models can sometimes still be found on the second-hand market, occasionally even below the original price. But there are risks too: undisclosed damage, wrong boxes and, in rare cases, outright fakes. In this article we explain what to look out for.
Check the condition of the model
Always ask for multiple photos: from above, both sides, front and rear, and close-ups of the wheels, mirrors and aerials. These are the vulnerable parts that break or go missing first. With resin models, the paintwork is also a point of attention: check in the photos whether there is any flaking or dullness.
Check the original packaging
The original box is an essential part of the value of premium models. Ask for a photo of the box, the interior (foam or holder) and the serial number or certificate. Be aware: a model in the wrong box (incorrect serial number, different colour description) is a sign that something is not right.
Check the price
A price that is much lower than the prevailing market value is sometimes a bargain, but more often a signal that something is wrong. Compare the asking price with similar listings on Marktplaats, eBay and specialist forums. If a sold-out model is being offered at a fraction of the normal price, ask explicitly why.
Red flags when buying second-hand
- No photos or poor photos: a serious seller has nothing to hide
- Vague about condition ("minor damage" without a photo)
- No original box or "box lost": for premium models this significantly lowers the value
- Price too good to be true for a rare model
- Seller cannot explain the provenance ("received as a gift", "found in the attic")
Where can you buy second-hand scale models?
- Marktplaats: large supply, but variable quality of sellers
- eBay (international): access to rare models, but watch out for shipping costs and import risk
- Fairs: you can inspect the model beforehand, ideal for critical purchases
- Specialist dealers: higher price, but more certainty about condition and authenticity
- Auction houses: for rare models with a valuation report
