Photographing scale models: how to take photos that show their value
Whether you want to sell your collection or document it for insurance purposes: good photos are indispensable. A blurry or poorly lit image lowers the perceived value. With a smartphone and a few simple adjustments you can take photos that do justice to the quality of your models.
Choose the right background
A neutral background (white, light grey or black) ensures the model takes centre stage. You can use a large sheet of white card or a piece of fabric. Avoid busy backgrounds: they distract the eye and make it harder to assess the condition of the model.
Light is everything
Daylight (indirect, not direct sunlight) is the best light source. Place the model next to a window on a cloudy day. Avoid harsh flash, which causes distracting reflections on lacquered surfaces. If good daylight is not available, LED panels or a light tent are excellent alternatives.
Which angles are important?
- Three-quarter front: the classic angle, shows the front and one side
- Three-quarter rear: shows the rear and the other side
- Top view: shows the roof and overall condition
- Detail shots: interior, wheels, any damage
- Box and certificate: always photograph separately
Be honest about damage
Photograph any damage (chipping, discolouration, missing mirrors) clearly and up close. A buyer who discovers damage only upon receipt is a lost customer or leads to a return. Honesty about condition builds trust and speeds up the sale.
