Why CMC scale models are so expensive

February 17, 2026 · · Modelcar.com

Anyone who holds a CMC model for the first time immediately understands why they are so expensive. It is not a scale model — it is a miniature work of art. CMC (Classic Model Cars) from Stuttgart has been producing the most detailed scale models in the world for decades, and that comes at a price. But what makes them so special?

Thousands of individual parts

A typical CMC model consists of 800 to 1,500 individual parts: some models have more than 2,000. Every part is made separately and assembled by hand. The engines are fully realised, including wiring looms, bolts and plates that are barely visible to the naked eye. The brake discs have real cooling fins. The exhaust pipes are each individually crafted.

Hand finishing

Every CMC model is hand-painted and finished by specialised craftspeople. The paint is real automotive lacquer, applied in multiple layers and hand-polished. Leather interiors use genuine leather. Fabric interiors are woven from textile fibres. This is craftsmanship at the level of watchmaking.

Limited editions

CMC models are always produced in limited editions, typically 2,000 to 5,000 pieces worldwide. Each model has a numbered certificate. Once sold out, a model is never re-released. This makes them scarce, and scarcity drives up prices on the secondary market.

Which CMC models are worth the most?

  • Mercedes-Benz W196 Silberpfeil: the iconic Silver Arrow, one of the most sought-after models
  • Auto Union Type C: pre-war Grand Prix racer, rare and timelessly valuable
  • Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR "Uhlenhaut Coupé": one of the most beautiful CMC models ever made
  • Ferrari 250 GTO: classic Ferrari in the typical CMC execution
  • Sold-out models: once a CMC model is discontinued, the price rises quickly

What can you expect when selling?

CMC models in perfect condition with original packaging, certificate and gloves typically fetch €400 to €1,500. Rare or discontinued editions can achieve higher prices. We know the CMC market well and appraise your models based on current international demand.
